Maison Joseph Drouhin, established in Beaune in 1880, is one of Burgundy’s most historically significant and revered négociant-éleveurs. For four generations, the Drouhin family has championed an elegant style that favors finesse and precision over heavy, over-extracted power.
Their village-level Gevrey-Chambertin represents a masterful blend of select plots spanning this iconic Côte de Nuits commune. The chalky, clay-marl soils here naturally endow Pinot Noir with robust muscle and structure, which Drouhin expertly shapes into a remarkably fluid, bright, and classical expression.
Wine Description
The Joseph Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin 2024 features a brilliant, clear ruby color in the glass. True to the house style, the nose is intensely aromatic and exceptionally fresh, bursting with notes of ripe black cherries, wild blackberries, and a fine hint of licorice. A very discreet, integrated oak profile wraps around the fruit, yielding whispers of light baking spice and nutmeg.
On the palate, the 2024 vintage showcases a lighter, delightfully purist "Burgundian" energy. It is medium-bodied with an elevated, mouthwatering acidity that underscores the purity of the red and black fruits. The tannins are incredibly fine-grained and powdery, lacking any rustic harshness.
Crafted from 100% Pinot Noir, the fruit was fully destemmed and fermented using indigenous yeasts. The wine was aged for 14 to 16 months in French oak barrels sourced from high-density forests, with a restrained 20% to 25% new oak. To ensure seamless wood integration, Drouhin insists on weathering their stave wood for a full three years before barrel coopering. This youthful, vibrant vintage can be enjoyed early with aeration but will age comfortably for 8 to 13 years.
